434-litre boot, quiet diesel cruising, sofa-soft damping, the mid-size wagon pick for a month in the bay with regular excursions out.

At a glance
Who is this car for?
Renters who want more than a hatchback's packing space without the length of a full estate, ideal for Skadar Lake fishing kit, Cetinje monastery day-bags and a cool-box for the drive home.
- Long-stay renters
- Skadar Lake day-trippers
- Families visiting monasteries
Best regional use
The long-travel suspension shrugs off the patchy bitumen on the old Ulcinj–Budva road, the dCi diesel sips on the Sozina tunnel run, and the generous boot takes two weeks of family kit plus the laundry bag you pick up in Prčanj.
On Montenegro roads
Behind the wheel
The Megane on Ulcinj rosters is still the outgoing fourth-gen C-segment hatch, not the narrow E-Tech crossover that has replaced it for European private buyers. The one to ask for is the 1.5 Blue dCi 115 diesel; the cheaper 1.3 TCe petrol is honest enough on the flat south coast but punishes you on any sustained Rumija climb. Both run a six-speed manual that is long-geared and unhurried, and the suspension tune is softer than most rivals, so the patched concrete sections leaving Donji Stoj toward Ada are absorbed rather than transmitted. The cabin reads a touch dated next to a Golf but the seats are noticeably more comfortable on a long Albanian motorway leg.
On Montenegro roads
Ulcinj's daily roster suits the Megane's compliance. The bay-road dive south through Sas village and out to the Bojana stilt restaurants still has stretches of broken bitumen where a Megane rides flatter than anything short of a DS 7. The 30 km haul up the new Bar road sits in sixth at 1,500 rpm at a steady 100 km/h and returns close to the WLTP figure of 4.3 L/100 km. For day-trips into Shkoder via Sukobin the diesel torque is the point, you pull from 1,700 rpm out of the border barrier without dropping below third, and you reach the Rozafa fortress car park on the same fuel gauge needle you left Ulcinj on.
Space and load
At 434 litres the Megane's boot is the largest hatch volume on the Ulcinj roster and the squareness of the cargo area makes the figure honest. Six hard cases fit for a family of four flying out of Tivat on the morning Vienna flight; a full kitesurf rig, board, kite, harness, two wetsuits and a 40-litre cool-bag, sits alongside the weekly Mercator shop without rearranging anything. For multi-week renters the Megane is the car that doesn't make you triage when an unplanned errand turns up, fold the rear bench and a SUP, two bikes with front wheels off, or a tent-and-camping setup for a Lake Skadar weekend all travel without complaint.

Best journeys for this car
The Megane's best-fit Ulcinj renter is the long-stay traveller expecting to put real distance on the odometer during the hire. Two weeks based in town with a four-day Albanian loop, Ulcinj, Shkoder, Tirana, Berat, back via Lezhe, is the standard brief; full-insurance and an unlimited-mileage line on the contract turn that loop from a calculation into a non-event. It also works for a family of four landing at Tirana airport who need one car that handles both the airport leg through Sukobin and a second week of inland excursions. Retirees on a month-long stay rate it for the soft ride and the conventional touchscreen layout.
Practical notes
Diesel economy settles at 4.5 L/100 km in mixed use, the 50-litre tank pushes past 1,100 km between fills, and that range covers a Shkoder–Theth–Valbona stretch without a forecourt stop on the Albanian side, useful when card-acceptance gets patchy in the highlands. The 4.36 m length is workable in the Pristan bays and easy at the larger Liman 2 lot, and the trolley load from a Voli or Idea run becomes a one-trip job rather than two. Front-wheel drive on all-season rubber is fine year-round around Ulcinj itself; a winter chains pack from the rental office is sensible if the diary includes Plav or Vusanje after early December.
The verdict
Pick the Megane when the brief is a long Ulcinj base plus genuine multi-day distance work and you want the largest practical boot without moving up to an estate. Skip it if the trip is mostly bay-contained around Mala Plaza or you specifically want the firmer character of a Golf or 308.
