On Montenegro roads
Behind the wheel
The Mk3 308 is a notch more grown-up than anything in the B-segment lined up in Ulcinj, longer in the wheelbase, quieter on a coarse surface, and aimed at a different sort of week. The 1.5 BlueHDi 130 diesel with the 8-speed EAT auto is the rental-spec to ask for, and it is the one combination that suits the Ulcinj-base-plus-distance brief. Torque arrives at 1,750 rpm, which is exactly where it earns its money on the Sozina climb out of the coast, the auto box reads the 25 bends of the Rumija road without hunting, and the small i-Cockpit wheel makes the tight runs above Bratica markedly less work than a conventional rim.
On Montenegro roads
Montenegro's Smokovac–Mateševo motorway is where the 308 banks back its rental premium. The Ulcinj-to-Zabljak run that used to mean three hours of gear-changing now spends most of its distance at a steady 120 km/h with the diesel ticking over near 1,800 rpm. Closer to home the 308 also handles the longer cross-border arc through Sukobin, down the Albanian side of Lake Skadar to Shkoder, and back over the Hani i Hotit crossing in a single relaxed day. The Bar–Stari Bar diversion to wander the abandoned hill town slots in without changing the day's mood.
Space and load
The 412-litre boot is the spec line that matters most to multi-day Ulcinj renters. Four adults' hard cases plus a fortnight's shop from the Voli on the Bar road fit without anything migrating onto the rear bench; a pair of 50-litre packs, hiking boots and walking poles for a Prokletije weekend out of Plav travel alongside a toddler buggy and the family laundry sack. Fold the 60/40 bench and 1,309 litres swallow a stand-up paddleboard in its inflatable bag for a Bojana morning, or a folded patio parasol if the rental villa above Pinjes hasn't supplied one.

Best journeys for this car
The 308 fits the family of four basing in Ulcinj for ten to fourteen nights. The pattern is usually three or four days running between Mala Plaza, Ada Bojana and the Stara Maslina olive groves, then a two-night break inland to Zabljak or Kolasin, then a southbound push over Sukobin for a couple of days in Shkoder or Theth before the final beach stretch. It is also the right car for older couples building a Balkan loop around a Ulcinj week, the firmer seats and the quieter cabin are kinder over a long Albanian highway leg than a hatch on the same brief.
Practical notes
Real-world diesel consumption is 4.5 L/100 km in mixed Montenegrin driving and closer to 4.2 on the motorway, and the 52-litre tank pushes well past 1,000 km between fills, more than any single day on this side of the country asks of you. The 4.37 m length is the only caveat: it fits the marked bays along the Pristan harbour wall and the Liman lots without drama, but a couple of the older diagonal slots near the Stari Grad gate need a three-point turn that a Clio gets away without. Diesel is plentiful at Jugopetrol and INA on the bay road, and unlimited mileage on the booking is worth confirming before the long inland weeks.
The verdict
Choose the 308 when the fortnight blends Ulcinj base-nights with serious distance work, the motorway out to Durmitor, the Sukobin run into Albania, the BiH push toward Trebinje. Skip it if the trip never leaves the strip between Mala Plaza and Velika Plaza, where a Clio or C3 parks easier and costs roughly a third less per week.
